The power of the human mind is the greatest tool any being can have in their possession. The possibilities available to each individual, when they understand the power of their mind, are truly unlimited. Napoleon Hill, a pioneer in the study of mind power once said, “There are no limitations to the mind, except those we acknowledge. Both poverty and and riches are the offspring of thought”, and there is not a more true and accurate statement in the world today.

Our life is so filled with expectations of success that we hardly even meet them. And when we do, it’s not what we thought it was going to be. Only about 5% of the population actually become successful in their lives – true success. They are the ones that are able to unleash the power of their minds and the power of their thoughts.

What is it that success means to you? If you cannot answer that truthfully, then don’t be alarmed. You are just like 95% of the population that have tried and could not answer that simple question. Most people that pursue success – never really become successful.

The only true way to become successful is to be successful in our own minds first. We must think success. We must believe success. Earl Nightingale, the founder of Nightingale-Conant, discovered in six words – the meaning of success – “We become what we think about.”

It’s so simple, yet so elusive. It’s elusive because our minds have been programmed for failure. But not always. When we were young – 0-8 years old – we lived life filled with dreams. In those years, we took risks – not realizing that society thought it was wrong to do so. At least that’s what we were told. During that time we were being programmed for failure-by our well-meaning parents, schools, friends, adults, and so forth. We were told that to dream big dreams were only for special people. People with wealth. People with talent. People with education.

We were told that only a small percentage of the population became successful and that the rest of us should just follow along. Go to school, get an education and get a job. That was our life. I want to tell you right now – THAT’S A BUNCH OF STUPID, OLD-FASHIONED THINKING!

I am not here to preach to you about keeping your mind in a vaccum, or to preach about the power of positive thinking. When I was heartbroken, the last thing I wanted to hear was how it was my fault for feeling that way. I understand that and am sympathetic to that, but the fact is we do feel how our brain tells us to feel. If we are dwelling on the past, thinking how we lost our one true chance at love, then our brain is going to tell our body to behave as if this is a fact.

However, if we can convince ourselves that this was a learning experience that we are grateful for, then our brain will convey that message to our body. Instead of living with a feeling of regret, we begin to feel at peace and thankful for the experience we shared with another human being. Feeling at peace will completely change your life. You can be angry, bitter, or full of regret, or you can feel at peace and ready to move on in your journey through your life. The choice is really up to you.

The first step in changing the way you think and feel about your situation is learning how to meditate. Meditation is when you free your mind of all thought, while at the same time, releasing all stress from your body. This is a practice exercised by millions of people all over the world and is conducive to living a healthy life. Meditation is easier than you might realize. Most of us have dabbled in meditation through conscious relaxation techniques. You’ve done it maybe while attending an exercise class, or before a stress test is administered, or even while you were at the dentist’s office.

We start by focusing all of our attention on our breathing. Focusing on your breathing helps to clear all of the clutter from your mind, while at the same time, relaxes the muscles in your body. With repeated effort, the goal of clearing your mind – thinking of nothing – does occur and the process of meditation takes on its own energy.

The following meditation comes from an ancient Indian text called the Malini Vijaya Tantra, which dates back about 5000 years. It is a very easy meditation, yet very powerful in its capacity to quiet your mind and connect you with your Essence or Inner Spirit.

UNIVERSAL MANTRA MEDITATION

This meditation uses a mantra as your object of focus. A mantra is a word or phrase that has the power to catalyze a shift into deeper, more peaceful states of awareness. The mantra we will be using for this meditation is: Aum. Aum does not have a literal translation. Rather, it is the essential vibration of the universe. If you were to tune into the actual sound of the cosmos, the perpetual sound of Aummm is what you would hear.

Although this mantra is sometimes chanted aloud, in this meditation, you will be repeating the mantra mentally… silently. Before we get to the actual steps, there are a few important points to be aware of.

* One of the keys to this meditation is repeating the mantra gently or faintly in your mind.

The power of this technique comes from letting go and allowing your attention to dive into the deeper realms of awareness. Therefore, even though you will be focussing on the mantra, staying focussed on the mantra is not the aim of this meditation. Trying too hard to stay focussed would keep your attention from descending into the deeper realms. Instead, you will be repeating the mantra with “minimal effort”, and giving your mind the space to wander a bit.

* I suggest that you resist the temptation to make something happen, and allow the mantra to do the work.

If you want to meditate but find your mind is too cluttered with thoughts to relax, then I suggest you look into brainwave entrainment software.

Steps of Universal Mantra Meditation

1. Sit comfortably, with your eyes closed and your spine reasonably straight.
2. Begin repeating the mantra gently in your mind.
3. Repeat the mantra at whatever tempo feels most natural. There is no need to synchronize the mantra with your breathing, but if this occurs naturally, it’s ok.
4. Allow the mantra to arise more faintly in your mind… repeating it with minimal effort.
5. Continue repeating the mantra faintly, and allow for whatever happens.

* If at any time, you notice yourself slipping into a sleep-like or dream-like state, just allow this to happen.
